The List of B Vitamins

The B Vitamins are a group of water-soluble vitamins that play many important roles in maintaining superior health. The Vitamin B group includes 8 chemically distinct vitamins that often can be found in the same foods. These include:

  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): Works with other b Vitamins to break down and release energy from food as well as maintaining the health of your nerves and muscle tissue.
  • Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): Keeps the skin, eyes and the nervous system healthy. Produces steroids as well as red blood cells.
  • Vitamin B3 (Niacin or Niacinamide): Also helps to produce energy from foods we eat. Works to keep the digestive and nervous system healthy.
  • Vitamin B5 (Pantothentic Acid): Another of the B Vitamins that works to release energy from the foods we eat. Also used in many cosmetic hair products and to treat acne and obesity.
  • Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine, Pyridoxal, or Pyridoxine Hydrochloride): Helps the body to store  and use energy from protein and carbohydrates in food & helps to form haemoglobin, the substance that transports oxygen from the lungs to body tissues.
  • Vitamin B7 (Biotin): Promotes healthy hair & strong nails as wells as supporting cellular energy production.
  • Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid): works with Vitamin B12 to form healthy red blood cells. Works to reduce the risk of certain central nervous system defects.
  • Vitamin B12 (Various Cobalamins): Making red blood cells, keeping the nervous system healthy, releasing energy from foods we consume and processing folic acid.
  • Vitamin B-Complex: Generally, supplements containing all 8 are referred to Vitamin B Complex

A deficiency in one B Vitamin usually means a deficiency on other B Vitamins so it is important to give your body the appropriate amount of each. One way to do this is by supplementing your diet with a B-Complex supplement. The B Vitamins often work with other nutrients  promoting absorption and assimilation of various vitamins and minerals. Receiving all of the B Vitamins in one capsule can help to ensure that they assist each other to be more effective in the relationship between other vitamins and minerals.

Stay tuned for more information on Vitamin B including the recommended daily dosage for each.

Beat the Summer Heat!

Just wanted to pass along a few tips to beat the summer heat as the dog days of summer are fast approaching (not to mention the heatwave sweeping through the Midwest right now).
  • Schedule physically demanding activities at cooler times of the day. This includes doing your running / jogging at night or early morning. If running at night you may want to consider wearing a reflective running vest for your safety. Also, consider this when planning family activities or those trips to fair or amusement park.
  • Drink lots of water. Seems like common sense we know, but if you are exercising or working outside drink even when you do not feel thirsty.
  • When working or exercising outside take plenty of breaks. Now is not the time to be pushing yourself to new limits!
  • Eat light, nutritious meals and foods high in water content like fruits and vegetables.
  • Use sunscreen. We recommend SPF 15 or higher.
  • Wear light, loose cotton clothing and hats to keep the sun out of your face.
  • Stay in Inside! If you do not need to be outside in extreme heat, don't go!
Heat Exhaustion and Stroke is very serious. While the most at risk people are seniors and children everyone is at risk. if you experience any signs of heat exhaustion such as dry mouth, dizziness, fatigue and weakness, clam,y pale skin please consult a physician or ERT as soon as possible.

The List of Vitamin D Benefits Keeps Growing

Vitamin D, sometimes referred to as the "sunshine vitamin", is an essential fat soluble nutrient the body makes from sunlight and is also found in fish and fortified milk. Some research suggests that along with building strong bones other benefits include strengthening the immune system and lowering risks of diseases like diabetes, heart and kidney disease, high blood pressure, cancer and most recently multiple sclerosis.

Despite this impressive list, certain studies have shown that as many as nearly half of adults and children have less than optimum levels of Vitamin D. Dietary sources of Vitamin D include fatty fish species such as catfish, salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna, Fish Liver Oils such as Cod Liver Oil, beef liver and whole eggs. Check out this article for a guide on how much sunlight is optimum for obtaining adequate Vitamin D levels.

If you live in a northern state and don't get enough sunlight year round or do not include enough of the foods mentioned above Vitamin D Supplements can be an effective way to reach your bodies optimum level of Vitamin D. It is important for us to note that none of the claims above have been approved by the FDA and that every individual is different. It is wise to consult your physician before consuming any nutritional supplements.
